...Today started a bit earlier than our average Saturday, but that wasnt the reason why it was a bit difficult to down the usual orange juice and mini bagels. No, the butterflies in the stomach came from that uneasy feeling of your body fighting something difficult that your mind is set on accomplishing. This morning, Tare had her interview for dental hygiene school, as some of you know, and it's a bit intimidating and disproportionate that the culmination of years of class, long days and nights of study, service, work and internships should all come to a head at a two hour session with a few complete strangers. So, naturally, nerves were a bit high, and prayers were constant! (ps thanks for all of your prayers as well!)
Thanks to natural good looks, some generous sibling clothes sharing and even prayers for a good hair day ;) Tare had an added advantage to her inpressive academic, work and service resume...and we were off to the morining interview at the Utah College of Dental Hygiene!
We had been going over possible questions and ways to bring up key points to bring up for the past while and we refreshed her information on the way over to the interview. Even though I knew she was so ready to really make a great impression on the Admissions board, I was still so nervous to just drop her off and just wait! If she was nervous, I wasnt able to tell as I watched her confidently walk into lions den from the outside.
After about two hours, I got a call on my phone and I hurried to answer and come back to pick her up. I was very relieved, but not really surprised, to hear how well everything went, how nice everyone was, and how impressed they were with Taryn. I could tell she was happy too, especially with having this stressful part done and over with. So now, we just had to wait to hear back from the school. They told her as she left that they would be in contact very soon. So, we drove to costco and had some great samples as Tare told me more of the details of her interview; that she even had to write a small essay and take a timed IQ style test...Pretty intense interview!
When we got back in the car we were happy with the results of the morning, but still axious for the next few weeks to hear back from the school. We looked through the vast paraphernalia Tare got as she left her internivew and in it she found a sealed letter that she hadnt really noticed before. Not really knowing what it could be, she opened it and started reading outloud causually..."Taryn Hansen, Congratualtions! You have been issued an acceptance..." Wait, what?! Aparently, UCDH saves a few seats for those who are exceptionally qualified to be able to offer them acceptance to the school RIGHT AWAY! We were shocked! Tare of course had a hard time getting through reading the rest of the letter outloud, but by that time, I dont think either of us cared...she was in! We had no idea that she would be able to find out so soon, and thinking back, Tare remembered that the few other girls that were at the interview around the same time with her all kept glancing at the letter she had, but she thought nothing of it at the time.
Needless to say, I am so proud of my smart beautiful wife, and grateful for the hard work that she has put into earning this recognition and I know she'll be the best darn Dental Hygienist around (sorry Caroline, Im biased;). Even though i know she doesnt like the spotlight, I think you all would want to hear about this great news. So, Congratulations Tare, I love you and am so proud of you!
(ps For those of you who want to know specifics, shell be starting in the fall of 2009 at the Utah College of Dental Hygiene, which is one the few schools that offer a B.S. in Dental Hygiene, so shell have two B.S. degrees when all is said and done)
